The Electro-Acuscope & Myopulse Therapy System
The Electro-Acuscope/Myopulse Therapy System has been used in the animal world for over twenty-five years. The Acuscope and Myopulse are the only biofeedback modulated microcurrent therapy instruments available in health care today and are FDA approved for neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions as well as pain management. The number of veterinarians and animal therapists using these instruments is steadily increasing due to a demand for a physical therapy option after diagnostics have been performed.
The Acuscope operates by introducing a low level electrical current into the tissue cells in order to increase the availability of ATP and amino acids, increase protein synthesis so that cellular repair can occur, and reduce electrical resistance in a pathological area so the current has the ability to flow through the damaged tissue rather than around it, which greatly enhances the body's own self repair mechanisms. This results in a decrease of healing time for the animal of a minimum of 50%.
Unlike other microcurrent instruments on the market today, the Acuscope and Myopulse do not utilize a fixed output waveform. Both instruments have biofeedback technology and work with an infinitely variable waveform—the Acuscope produces a square waveform to address the neural pathways and the Myopulse utilizes a sinusoidal waveform to address soft and connective tissues. The biofeedback technology allows the instruments to measure the level of resistance in the tissue, input that information into its computer circuitry, and adjust the output to the patient in the exact amount of current that is needed by the particular tissue. This results in a very individualized treatment for each patient without the concern of over-treating the area and causing potential damage to the tissue.
Another feature is the diagnostic capabilities of the instruments. The instruments measure the amount of electrical activity and resistance in the tissue and provide a digital LED readout. This helps pinpoint the location of areas with abnormal conductivity which assists the therapist in determining a proper treatment protocol after the animal has been diagnosed by a veterinarian. This therapy has been consistently proven to be effective for a wide range of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions, both chronic and acute. More>
The response curve is very consistent for most cases. According to the manufacturer's protocols, all patients require three consecutive treatments within a 72 hour period. After the initial series is complete, the patients will require a series of follow up treatments which vary depending on the severity of the condition and the patient's response to the treatments. In general, the majority of patients reach results within the first 3-4 weeks utilizing this therapy system. As one component of the FDA approval for the Electro-Acuscope and Myopulse therapy system is for pain management, they may remain in a pain free state for a significant amount of time. Literature from the manufacturer states that 25% of the patient population will receive relief or resolution within the first 1-6 treatments, 50% percent within 6-12 treatments, and the remaining 25% will receive the results in 12-24 treatments.
